Looking back at the second year of the Baroque Chamber and Spectacular festival

From the end of August to the beginning of September, Vyškov once again resounded with the music of ancient centuries. The second year of the Baroque Chamber and Grand Festival invited its visitors to the world of the French Baroque, the era of King Louis XIV, when music, dance and theatre formed an inseparable part of court life. This year's dramaturgical theme Au pays du Roi-Soleil – In the Land of the Sun King – became the common thread of concerts, educational activities and the festival's closing ceremony.

The aim of the festival is to present Baroque music in its diversity and to show that historical music is not just a distant chapter in textbooks. It is a living art that can appeal to the contemporary listener with its immediacy, emotions and beauty.

From chamber sound to grand theater

This year's program offered several different perspectives on French musical culture. The concert Voices in Golden Light opened the festival in the spirit of vocal music, while the evening Silk Strings in the Land of the Sun King presented the sonic color of the harp in the context of French musical tradition. The concert Echoes of the French Court also provided space for participants in the festival courses.

The alternation of chamber concerts, distinctive solo performances and collaborative music-making is one of the festival's characteristic features. Baroque is not only the music of grand courts, ceremonial events and lavish performances. It is also the music of intimate moments, subtle nuances and personal dialogue between performer and listener.

Music that is passed on

An important part of the festival were also master classes focused on flute, singing and harpsichord. Meetings of students, teachers and experienced performers offered a space for sharing experiences and a deeper understanding of historically informed interpretation.

The educational dimension is essential for the festival. It is not only about presenting the results of professional art, but also about creating opportunities for the growth of young musicians and the transfer of interpretative experience. It is precisely the connection of concert life with education that can help to develop interest in early music among future generations.

Final evening under the sign of the Sun King

The highlight of the festival came on Saturday, September 5, when a selection from one of the most remarkable works of French court theater – Le Ballet Royal de la Nuit , the Royal Ballet of the Night, was performed in the historic setting of the Vyškov Cemetery Church .

This extraordinary work is inextricably linked to the young Louis XIV, who appeared in it in the role of the Rising Sun in 1653. This painting became one of the most striking symbols of his future reign and French court culture.

The Vyškov performance offered a shortened, approximately one-hour stage-concert version of the work, combining historical musical sources, live interpretation, and dance. Preparing such a project was an exceptionally demanding task.

The orchestra was led by Michaela Koudelková and Sarah Jedličková also participated in the musical performance. Eight dancers from the Brno Dance Conservatory brought a movement component to the evening, which helped to bring Baroque theater closer as an art connecting music, gesture and image. The singing parts were prepared by the Antonín Tučapský Choir under the direction and with preparation provided by the Vyškov Municipal Cultural Center and lecturer Alina Dubik.

The result was a meeting of several artistic disciplines and generations of performers. The project reminded us that Baroque theatre was not just a costumed concert, but a complex artistic world in which music and dance together created a compelling story.

A festival that wants to take root in Vyškov

The second year of the Baroque Chamber and Grand Festival confirmed the meaning of the dramaturgy, which, in addition to the concert experience, also offers education and space for the emergence of new artistic collaborations. This year's French chapter showed a wide spectrum of Baroque music - from chamber expression to a demanding stage project that required the cooperation of the orchestra, singers and dancers.

A big thank you goes to all the performers, teachers, collaborators and partners who participated in the preparation of the festival. Without their expertise, time and willingness to cooperate, a project of this scale would not have been possible.

We would also like to thank all the visitors who shared this year's journey to the land of the Sun King with us. It is the interest of the audience that gives such projects meaning and allows us to develop the cultural life of the city with programs that connect historical heritage with a contemporary artistic perspective.

Baroque, both chamber and grand, is coming to an end with this year's edition, but its story continues. We believe that we will be able to return to Vyškov with further discoveries from the world of early music, with new artistic encounters and with a program that will continue to surprise with its diversity.
